Welcome to my small collection of Billie Holiday photographs. These pictures show her at her best when posing for promotional shots, and at her worse, near the end of her life. One of the finest interpreters of Jazz and Blues in the forties and fifties, Billie never really had a chance. Born into poverty and child prostitution her only escape from the horrors of her past were her music and heroin. It was the latter that killed her.
A posed shot taken late in Billie's life.
Billie in the studio looking happy
Near the end. Her last recording session.
Promotional photo, but when she was healthy and happy.
Singing her heart out on stage
Giving it her all, as always.
You can read more about Billie and some of her recordings at a review of a DVD featuring her, and at my review of her live CD from Storyville.
